About this Event
Whether you are going on a date, or a eating the fruit, dates brings people together. In Islam, the date is sacred. It is mentioned in the Quran more than any other fruit-bearing plant. Muslims often eat this nutritious fruit to break their fast during Ramadan. In this in-person, fun, and free cooking demonstration, chef Jamela demonstrates how to prepare deliciously nutritious meals with dates.
Chef Jamela Bilal is an African American Muslim Woman from Philadelphia. Her formal training is in Elementary Education and Graphic Design/Marketing, but she always yearned for more. In 2008 she was hired by a local Chef to develop their brand and marketing strategy for a new restaurant. While developing their brand, Jamela was exposed to professional cooking, and a passion emerged. She had been creatively cooking for her oldest son with food allergies, but the exposure to professional food preparation awakened a spark within her. Chef Jamela honed her talent as a chef working with professional chefs in the area until she eventually branched off on her own. She currently owns a full-service catering/meal prep company and teaches Culinary Arts to children.
