Thursday May 2 we're excited to welcome The SticklerPhonics!Scott Amendola, the Berkeley drummer, composer and bandleader who’s been a creative force for the past three decades on the Bay Area jazz scene (and far beyond), knows all about the power of subtraction. His latest group, the stripped-down trio SticklerPhonics, brings together long-time collaborators Raffi Garabedian on tenor saxophone and trombonist Danny Lubin-Laden for a rhythmically and texturally expansive program of originals on Technicolor Ghost Parade, which is slated for release on May 3rd, 2024.
Plunging into the unmediated terrain that opens up in the absence of the usual guidelines, the trio revels “in a situation where there’s no bass and no chords,” Amendola says. “The sound is ever evolving. We’re really settling in, but there’s also the feeling like there are places to go.” With all three players contributing tunes, SticklerPhonics is a volatile combo that draws on a vast continuum of jazz practices, from traditional jazz polyphony and ambient soundscapes to funk and free jazz. The trio can generate fierce grooves and render through-composed pieces with the textural acuity of a chamber ensemble. Amendola’s canny use of electronics expands the trio’s sonic palette to the horizon.
WORKSHOP:
The band will be offering a workshop on the day of the show focussing on improvising, touring and the techniques of writing for specific projects. The workshop will be 90 mins from 6-7:30 pm. Cost is just $35 and includes admission to the show.
