PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This presentation will provide a high-level overview of the current state of New Orleans’ infrastructure, including major capital projects, FEMA recovery efforts, infrastructure coordination, operational improvements within the Department of Public Works, and the City’s strategies for improving transportation infrastructure, public safety, and long-term resilience.
FEATURED SPEAKER
Steve Nelson, P.E., serves as Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Infrastructure and Director of the Department of Public Works for the City of New Orleans, appointed in January 2026 by Mayor Helena Moreno to lead the administration’s “Fix the Basics” infrastructure strategy; in this dual role, he oversees the City’s streets, sidewalks, street lighting (the “Lights On” initiative), and traffic signals.
Mr. Nelson previously served as General Superintendent of the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) from January 2024 to January 2026, directing the daily utility and maintenance operations of the City’s water, sewerage, and drainage systems, having been promoted to that role from Deputy General Superintendent of the SWBNO (January – December 2023), where he oversaw daily escalations and maintenance protocols and helped expedite City pavement repairs. Before relocating to New Orleans, Mr. Nelson was a project manager with Century West Engineering in Washington State; he holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from Washington State University and is a licensed Professional Engineer in both Louisiana and Washington.
