Tucked within San Marcos’ historic Dunbar neighborhood, the Cephas House stands as a powerful reminder of craftsmanship, resilience, and community legacy. Built by Ulysses Cephas - a Blacksmith, carpenter, musician, and entrepreneur - the home reflects the skill and spirit of a man who overcame the challenges of his time to become a respected local figure. Born in 1884 to formerly enslaved parents, Cephas designed and constructed his own home and shop, became an independent business owner in 1933, and used his talents to serve the community in remarkable ways. From forging custom tools and medical devices to helping identify perpetrators of racial violence by reading horseshoe prints, Cephas’s life was marked by innovation and quiet courage.
Today, the Cephas House is preserved as a symbol of Black excellence and self-determination in San Marcos. While it is not open for regular visitation, the space occasionally hosts cultural programming, art workshops, and special events in collaboration with the nearby Calaboose African American History Museum. A testament to local advocacy and historical preservation, the Cephas House remains a meaningful gathering space and a tribute to the legacy of Ulysses Cephas and the community that continues to uplift his story.
