The Sporting Spine
This practical lecture explores how the spine responds to the physical demands of sport. It covers biomechanics, loading patterns, injury risks, and prevention strategies. Two case studies, one involving a younger athlete and one an older participant, highlight age-related considerations. The practical session includes spinal examination, proprioception assessment, spinal and pelvic strength and muscle testing, along with guidance on rehabilitation approaches.
Background
Clive Lathey qualified from the BSO in 1983 and has worked in Australia, New Zealand, and Spain before returning to London in 1989. He runs the Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy and works part-time at the HCA Medical Centre in Chelsea. Clive treats a diverse range of patients, including athletes, and collaborates with NHS and private GPs. He lectures at various institutions and has worked at the London and Rio Olympics. Clive has also been involved with professional sports teams and athletes. He emphasizes exercise rehabilitation and injury prevention in his treatments. In his spare time, he supports the Rugby Works charity.
Tim Allardyce is a Registered Osteopath and Chartered Physiotherapist with 20 years’ experience, who has worked at the top end of sport. Tim is a non-medical prescriber and injection therapist, and he has a keen interest in rehabilitation and digital health. He is strong advocate of the NHS and is an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur and mentor. Tim has presented lectures on behalf of the International Olympic Committee, and has been to seven Olympic Games. Tim also lectures for the Royal College of General Practitioners, and is Clinical Lead for Rehab My Patient software as well as Clinical Director at Surrey Physio Group.
