The Spirit of Byron: Philhellenism and the Greek War of Independence is a new and original bicentennial exhibition, exclusive to Melbourne's Hellenic Museum from Friday 19 April 2024 – January 2025.On 19 April 1824, amid the Greek War of Independence, Lord Byron died in the town of Mesologgi. Though he’d scarcely been in Greece for 100 days, his contributions to the revolt would live on for centuries in the heart of a newborn nation.
Now, exactly two hundred years later, The Spirit of Byron premieres at the Hellenic Museum. Featuring a curated selection of works on paper from The Robertson Collection, this original exhibition commemorates the bicentenary of Lord Byron’s death, exploring the Greek War of Independence and the Philhellenic movement through the lens of his remarkable legacy and the rich visual culture of the Romantic period.
Discover the dynamic interplay of art, literature and politics during a time of great liberal and national upheaval, and how the ‘rich Byronic postscript’ continues to whirl and spark in the present day.
The Spirit of Byron: Philhellenism and the Greek War of Independence is exclusive to the Hellenic Museum, from Friday 19 April 2024. Plan your visit today.
