On the 10th of December 2024, The Melaleuca Jazz Orchestra and NIMA are very proud to present 'The Songs of the Jazz Greats'.Throughout the 20th century, Jazz has had many vocalists that changed the sound of jazz, created the sound of a generation, and most importantly, created music that was timeless and eternally loved. From Ella Fitzgerald to Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan to Louis Armstrong, each singer took music from the American Songbook, or from their own mind, and filled the airwaves with their voices, each voice unique, though still a part of the fabric of jazz.
The Melaleuca Jazz Sextet will be performing a selection of well-loved songs featuring Sydney vocalist Melody Beck, and members of the highly acclaimed Melaleuca Jazz Orchestra.
About Melody Beck:
Melody has had a passion for singing and performing from a very early age, growing up surrounded by the music of Gilbert & Sullivan.
Melody completed her BMUS in singing at UNSW, later completing four diplomas in performance, plus gaining industry training from the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts London and performing in Masterclasses with the likes of Adam Guettel, Hayden Tee, and Marni Nixon (Sydney, London, New York).
Melody has gained many professional credits in musical theatre since establishing her career, including numerous seasons, national tours and cruise ship engagements. In 2014 Melody won the Your Theatrics International Cabaret Contest, which toured Australia and New York with her cabaret show 'UNSEEN: The Voice of Hollywood, A tribute to Marni Nixon', later being invited to collaborate with Marni Nixon in New York.
Melody has also written and produced a number of highly acclaimed shows that have toured Australia.
Since 2020, Melody has performed regularly as a jazz vocalist, with a 3 year weekly residency at The Grounds of the City, a residency at The Old Fitz, sold out performances at Lazybones and Moya's Juniper Lounge, plus a featured artist performing for Australian Mining, The Australian Defence Force, and a month of performances for VIP International guests from South Korea. She has performed alongside some of Australia's leading jazz artists and released her debut album in 2024.
About the Melaleuca Jazz Orchestra:
The Melaleuca Jazz Orchestra are a Sydney based big band featuring some of Australia's leading jazz musicians and big band musicians. Led by Elsen Price and co-directed by James Ryan and Stu Vandegraaff, the band has performed consistent sold-out gigs in the Sydney area, with a band featuring some of Australia's most respected music veterans and highly talented emerging players.
