About this Event
Please join the SANT research committee for our first conference, which highlights new research from postgraduates studying the north east. The event will be held on Saturday, February 1st, in the Keeton-Lomas Lecture Theatre (G.09) - this is on the ground floor of the Armstrong Building on Newcastle University main campus. For access please enter via the main entrance (opposite the RVI), which is an accessible entrance, or via the side entrance, off the quadrangle (please note there are steps up to this entrance).
The event welcomes members and non-members from 9:30 with a planned start of papers at 9:40am. We have seven papers this year from researchers at Northumbria University and Newcastle University.
- Kerri Armstrong, 'The Women of Durham, Newcastle and York Gaol, 1853-1887'
- Charlotte Emily Crawshaw, 'Learning through Letters: The Distance Education of Matthew Montagu through the Correspondence of Elizabeth Montagu'
- Damian Rudge, 'A Chaîne Opératoire of Lead used in the Military Bath House at Red House, Corbridge'
- Daniel Riddell, 'Quaysiders: The Collegial Conflict of Nineteenth Century Merchants and Shipbrokers in Newcastle-upon-Tyne'
- Olivia Colborn, 'Discovering Modernism in Newcastle's Literary and Philosophical Society, 1910-1939'
- Abby Hammond, '‘A Lady of the Most Exemplary Life’: the Life, Death, and Memorialisation of Dame Jane Clavering'
- June Watson, 'Health Tourism: The Northumbrian Aristocracy in Madeira 1810-1812'
Tea/coffee will be provided during a short comfort break, but attendees will need to make their own lunch arrangements following the conference end at 1pm.
