The Silence We Inherit / Black Angels

The Silence We Inherit is an intimate and powerful multimedia performance exploring the unspoken legacy of trauma, identity, and resilience passed between mother and daughter. Through personal storytelling, projected imagery, film, and traditional Odori dance, Mary Tamaki unravels the silence surrounding her mother’s incarceration as a Japanese American during World War II and reflects on how history lives on in families long after the events themselves have passed. At once deeply personal and universally resonant, the piece moves between humor, heartbreak, memory, and awakening — tracing one woman’s search to understand the quiet grief, survival, and emotional inheritance carried by a generation taught not to speak of the past. Blending memoir with historical reflection and artistic expression, The Silence We Inherit is ultimately a meditation on voice, identity, and what it means to finally break the silence.
