The Shape of Belonging: A Sonic Journey
Becky Siame
Whakatū/Nelson
The Shape of Belonging is a spoken word and healing ambient music performance that explores one of the most universal human questions: where do I belong?
Created by Whakatū-based spoken word artist and best-selling author Becky Siame, this 50-minute performance blends poetic storytelling with live, atmospheric soundscapes, inviting the audience into an intimate and reflective space. Through carefully woven narrative, voice, and music, listeners are guided through themes of identity, displacement, self-worth, and the quiet moments that shape who we become.
This is not a traditional talk, nor a conventional music performance. It sits at the intersection of spoken word, transformational storytelling, and immersive sound. A shared experience designed to be felt as much as heard. Words are used not just to tell a story, but to create rhythm, resonance, and emotional movement within the body.
Drawing from lived experience, personal reflection and collective memory, The Shape of Belonging offers a gentle yet powerful invitation to pause. To listen. To recognise the ways we search for belonging in places, people, roles, and expectations, and what happens when we begin to reclaim it within ourselves.
The accompanying ambient music creates a sonic container that supports the spoken word, allowing moments of stillness, release, and reflection. The result is a deeply human experience that many describe as grounding, moving, and quietly transformative.
Audience members may be gently invited into simple grounding moments, such as placing a hand on the heart or softly repeating a phrase, always optional, always held with care. There is no pressure to participate; listening is enough.
The Shape of Belonging is for those who enjoy meaningful storytelling, reflective performance, and music that holds space rather than demands attention. It’s an evening to slow down, feel deeply, and leave with something intangible yet enduring.
