Boswell Book Company and the Woman’s Club of Wisconsin present a special, ticketed dinner with Jenny Jackson, the New York Times bestselling author of Pineapple Street. Jackson appears for a conversation about her unforgettable new novel, The Shampoo Effect. An ambitious young woman insinuates herself into a tight-knit group of friends in a picturesque coastal New England town and upends all of their lives forever.

Caroline Lash arrives in Greenhead, MA and falls head-over-heels for litter-collecting kayak enthusiast Van Whittaker, who still runs with his childhood crowd: his beautiful ex-girlfriend, Bailey, old-moneyed and snobbish Augusta, and Fran, who's too fed up with boys to ever consider marrying one. They run wild through the marshes, beaches, houseboats, and bars of Greenhead, playing games as they always have. But when Bailey discovers she’s pregnant, the delicate balance is thrown off, Caroline is cast out, and in a potent mix of fury and heartbreak, long-held secrets (so many secrets!) are exposed. Dazzlingly funny and as juicy as it is astute, The Shampoo Effect is a story of late-night parties, early mornings with small children, the dawn of midlife, and a group of old friends finally growing up despite all their best efforts to the contrary.

Daniel Goldin is a huge fan of The Shampoo Effect. He says: “What emotional heft! I was alternatingly laughing, crying, and stressing out for the finely drawn characters. But perhaps its greatest accomplishment was convincing me to revisit John Updike, whose 1968 novel Couples casts a shadow over this story. Jackson’s second novel might be packaged as a breezy beach read, but don’t underestimate its sophisticated charms - I’d recommend The Shampoo Effect anytime, anywhere.”

Consider yourself warmly invited to enjoy this author conversation of this contemporary novel in the historic Woman’s Club of Wisconsin as it celebrates its 150th anniversary year.
