In observance of Caribbean Heritage Month, Paul Leroy's art installation will be on display. Paul Leroy's process involves a synthesis of tactile approaches: papier-mâché, sculpture, printmaking, painting and collage. In this current exhibition, his work is inspired by the peeling remnants of commercial advertising, the weathered remains of street art taking on a life of its own, once perhaps slick and glossy but falling into neglect and resembling fragments of ancient ruins. * Registration required.
Paul Leroy was born on August 6, 1971 in Brooklyn, NY. He is the son of Haitian immigrants and, before moving to Atlanta, spent most of his life and education going back and forth between New York and Miami. Leroy's early exposure to Haitian art and culture has had a significant influence on his art work and education. He received a BFA in visual arts from Florida International University in 1995, and a JD from Brooklyn Law School in 2001. As an active member of the DIY artist community, Leroy has spent most of his career as an artist organizing, curating and exhibiting in independent alternative spaces, as well as having his art published in independent art magazines. His mixed media assemblages are woven into narratives, and are documented by the artist in limited edition digital art prints, graphic novels, and short animated films. Paul Leroy has recently published his second graphic novel documenting the first 25 years of his career as a DIY underground artist, and is currently working on his 3rd graphic novel.
