Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull (1896) is a rueful domestic comedy that explores the intricate lives and loves of a theatrical family. At its heart is Madame Arkadina, a renowned actress and single mother, whose fame is contrasted by her stinginess with both affection and money. Her son, Konstantin, a troubled experimental playwright, is deeply in love with Nina, a mercurial and naive young actress. Nina’s affections, however, lead her to run off with Arkadina’s lover, Trigorin. Two years later, they all reunite at the lakeside estate where their stories began, culminating in a tragic and ironic ending. Under the direction of Scott Hudson, this production comes to life with music performed by members of the Conservatory Choir (Richard W. Robbins, director).
