A science talk about the history, chemistry & vital importance of physical touch for the human animal, with therapist, teacher & nervous system coach Micah Freeman, founder of Ego Strength Coaching and the Self Study Lab Podcast."The Science of Snuggling” explores co-regulation through the lens of evolutionary psychology and nervous system science. For roughly 200,000 years, humans survived in close-knit groups where touch, proximity, and connection helped regulate stress and create safety. Modern life has radically shifted those conditions, leaving many people more isolated, overstimulated, and chronically stressed than ever before. This talk examines how our nervous systems were designed for connection, why co-regulation matters so deeply, and what happens when we try to function without enough of it.
This talk will be livestreamed so you can attend from anywhere!
Those in the Portland area will have the opportunity to attend this talk live at Himmapan Cafe & Community, the cozy home base of SquishLab, a facilitated playspace for exploring & navigating the gifts & benefits of platonic touch, connection & coregulation. Optional snuggling during the science talk will be supported by SquishLab cofounder Raynsong McMahon.
As with all SquishLab events, there will be no pressure to cuddle. Coregulation & community healing happens through intentional & loving proximity.
Ticket links will be available in June. Stay tuned.
Squish events take place all over the city (and beyond) in the form of 2-hour workshops, slumber parties, cuddle concerts, camping trips, and weeklong retreats. We squish somewhere almost every week, check the calendar to see where we are squishing next.
