Facilitated by Lucas Priest, the SoPC new guided walk explores themes of studentification and community campaigns in Bonnington and Leith
About this Event

Come along to The School of Pedestrian Culture new walk on Thursday, February 9th!

Developed and facilitated by artist Lucas Priest, The School of Pedestrian Culture (SoPC) is a participant-driven ‘walking classroom’ which interweaves walking and talking with local politics, community resilience, friendships and art. SoPC walks challenge the way participants encounter public places and spaces through facilitated walking routes that reimagine cityscapes and urban histories.

SoPC’s newest walk will explore the complexities of studentification ( the gentrifying processes tied to the increased construction of student housings in University cities) as well as community campaigns in the Bonnington and Leith areas of Edinburgh.

The walk is free but booking is required as limited spaces are available

This walk is being delivered in conjunction with Resistance in Residence, an exhibition about community-led struggles for safe, affordable housing in Scotland curated by MScR students of Collection and Curating Practices at the University of Edinburgh in partnership with the Centre for Research Collection and the Travelling Gallery. The exhibition features archival materials, audience responses and contemporary artworks by Winnie Herbstein, Joey Simons, Keira McLean, and Lucas Priest that explore past, present and future community efforts for fair housing conditions.

More information about the exhibition and the Travelling Gallery can be found here

This walk was commissioned by the University of Edinburgh Art Collection as part of the Art Collection’s 2022 ECA Graduate Show Purchase Prize. The commission forms part of wider acquisition of Priest’s work and practice by the Collection.
