Some 50 years ago, Carl was told at school that the Romans never came down to Cornwall but stopped at the river Tamar. For many, even within the county, this idea still seems to be prevalent. The Fort at Nanstallon was excavated in the 1960’s but this remained the only known fort in Cornwall until the identification of another at Restormel. The introduction of techniques such as the use of LIDAR, and the results of excavations along the sites of major infrastructure developments has lead to a revolution about our knowledge of the Romans within Cornwall with the discovery of forts, marching camps, fortlets, signal stations, roads and more..
