The Roman gladius is one of the ancient world’s most recognisable weapons. In this evening talk, Dr Jaime Kaminski will explore the origins, design and evolution of the gladius, showing how this short sword became a decisive tool in Rome’s expansion.Examining archaeological examples, ancient texts and reconstructions, Dr Kaminski will refer to case studies of gladii in UK collections, including the Chapel Street gladius, cared for by The Novium Museum; the Mainz-Wiesbaden gladius, held by the Royal Armouries; and the Segontium gladius, held by Storiel, Bangor.
Join us on 26 May to discover how this simple yet sophisticated weapon helped shape the ancient world. Book tickets (£8 per person) via The Novium Museum online shop.
