About the Bandleader:
Baltimore-born, Eugene-based saxophonist, composer, and arranger Roger Woods brings a lifetime of jazz pedigree to this ambitious project. His musical roots trace back to Baltimore's Frederick Douglass Senior High School, where he studied under jazz legends Thomas DeLaine and Reppard Stone, and later to Howard University, where he played alongside future icons Geri Allen, Wallace Roney, and Greg Osby in the celebrated Howard University Jazz Ensemble.
Woods spent over a decade performing in Washington, D.C.'s top jazz circles before relocating to Oregon in 1995, where he quickly became a fixture of the Portland jazz scene — performing with luminaries like Mel Brown and Randy Porter, and later co-leading the nine-piece St. James/Woods Nonet as its primary composer and arranger. He has also served as baritone saxophonist and bass clarinetist for the Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra, led by the legendary bassist who once performed alongside Bill Evans and John Coltrane.
Now leading The Roger Woods Tentet — an ensemble stacked with some of Eugene's finest jazz musicians — Woods channels decades of experience and artistry into a powerful, timely program. This is a rare chance to hear jazz at its most purposeful: musically masterful and unmistakably urgent.
