About this Event
Do You remember Sokol, or is it totally new to you? A highly patriotic movement, in the
month when Czech National Day is observed, it is very appropriate to (re)discover and re-
evaluate Sokol.
Mark Dimond will give an illustrated talk on the history of Sokol since its origins in 1862. He
will look at the initial development of the gymnastics movement until the First World War,
highlighting the peak of its activities in the interwar period, and describe its dismantling at
the hands of both the Nazis and Communists, and its re-emergence after 1989.
The Revd Canon Mark Dimond Mark is currently the Rector at King’s Lynn Minster. He
worked in Prague in the early 1990s and was Baileys Brand Manager for the Czech and
Slovak Republics. He has also completed a DPhil thesis on the history of the Sokol
movement.
