The Richard Hoagland Papers on U.S. Diplomacy in Central Asia

The Kathryn W. and Shelby Callum Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies is proud to announce a new significant collection of materials on American diplomacy in Central Asia. Retired U.S. Ambassador Richard E. Hoagland recently donated his professional papers to the Davis Center, including thousands of documents, letters, diplomatic cables, and articles from over forty years in the region. Ambassador Hoagland’s career in Central and South Asia began in 1985 at the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, where he worked in the U.S. Information Agency on project to expand international coverage of the Soviet-Afghan War. Over subsequent decades, Hoagland served in senior positions, including as a public affairs officer at the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and as press spokesman at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, as well as U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan (2003–2007), Chargé d’Affaires to Turkmenistan (2007–2008), and U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan (2008–2011).
