The Return Of Great Guy (Film Premiere)

Seattle, WA, October 2--After more than 15 years in the making, a superhero comedy by Seattle expat filmmakers Michael Sanchez and Damon Di Cicco will finally see the light of day.

The Return of Great Guy was filmed in Seattle in 2006. It portrays the misadventures of an average man who dreams of being a superhero, but finds that crime-fighting doesn’t pay.

Director Michael Sanchez, who previously performed music and comedy in the guise of Great Guy for several years, completed principle photography the night before moving to Chicago.

“I didn’t mean for this movie to become a love letter to my old home, but it sort of became that as time went by,” Sanchez said.

In 2008, a computer crash wiped out much of Sanchez’s editing work. The film languished until Damon Di Cicco, who co-authored the script and appears in the titular role, contacted Sanchez about reviving the film using the dusty box of video tapes that still sat in Sanchez’s basement.

“Michael and I spent so much time on this movie--it was all we did for a whole year of our lives. I couldn’t just let it die,” Di Cicco said.

The passage of time turned The Return of Great Guy into a window on a bygone era of Seattle, featuring beloved locations such as the original Funhouse and the Guild 45th Theater.

“It’s a little bittersweet to watch it now,” Di Cicco said, “but I’m glad Great Guy is finally coming home.”

The film premieres at the Beacon Theater, 4405 Rainier Avenue South, on Sunday October 2nd at 7:30. Admission is $10.
