“In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities” Shunryu SuzukiThe art of clowning shares a strong connection to the archetype of the Fool which invites us to begin an adventure in innocence, playfulness and trust. The Fool doesn’t think ahead and doesn’t gaze back to the past. The Fool is always prepared for anything. The Fool plays with problems until they sort themselves out. The Fool is here to show us the opportunities we had no idea of existing.
The art of clowning is a rich tool for creators and performers of various disciplines. It stretches the creator's imagination, teaching to embrace one’s truthful emotions, connecting with the silly side, celebrating mistakes and vulnerability.
Exploring this style of performance helps us to overcome a range of inner blocks, for example, stage fright, staying grounded in the here and now. Clowning also encourages us to become more generous, playful and genuine, being connected with the audience and other performers, finding a game and pleasure in every challenge we face.
This workshop is inspired by the teachings of Jacques Lecoq and is for actors, theatre-makers, musicians, dancers, circus performers and the curious who would like to explore the realm and possibilities working with the smallest mask in the world - the red nose. No specific knowledge or background is needed, more important is the passion, empathy, curiosity and desire to explore. The workshop is physical and movement-based. There's time for observation, participation, feedback and reflection.

FACILITATOR:
Igne Barkauskaite is a Lithuanian-born theatre-maker, performer, and musician, based in Bristol since 2008. Her practice explores lived migration, mental health, social justice, the natural world and a relationship between personal and collective memory through mixed mediums - movement, poetry and sound, often in co-creation with others. Her role in collaborative work ranges from being a deviser, dramaturg and movement specialist, or a combination of these. In 2017 she founded Bristol Physical Theatre Project which facilitates theatre-making and ensemble-based training for professional performers and the wider community. She has also worked as a visiting tutor/workshop facilitator at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Bristol School of Acting and University of the Arts London.
In 2011-13 Igne trained at Jacques Lecoq Theatre School exploring devising, non-verbal performance and visual storytelling. She have since devised work with Complicité (Drive Your Plow Over The Bones of the Dead) Mechanimal (UND; Megalith; Still Life ), Wassail Theatre (Lorna Doone), 2019 Sarah Corbett (The Swimmer; Very Modern) and others.
In 2023, collaborating with producer-composer Jake Bright she released her debut album ‘Listen, I Have Something To Tell You’. Blending Lithuanian folk tradition, spoken personal diary entries, cinematic imagery and the influences of Bristol's electronic music scene the album explores the themes of memory, intimacy and searching for meaning in a time of disquiet.
