Jorie Schwartz has been a licensed independent social worker in Columbus for more than 25 years. She is a graduate of the MSW program at The Ohio State University and has worked primarily in the areas of community mental health and school-based prevention. Another area of interest she has is professional self-care. She has worked as a field coordinator, liaison, and community lecturer in the College of Social Work at OSU and is now in what she describes as her “dream job” as Associate Professor of Social Work and Human Services at Columbus State Community College.

I have had the opportunity to teach and advise many of students. My favorite part of the job is seeing those light bulb moments, especially when students discover a passion for the field. My students amaze me in their willingness to push themselves, especially in practicum. I love working with students who are an active part of their learning. I also get to work with the most amazing coworkers every day in addition to having a job that allows me to support and encourage students in their journey in becoming helping professionals. What could be better than that?

Objectives:

1. Participants will demonstrate the importance of self-care in social work.

2. Participants will examine how the NASW Code of Ethics addresses self-care.

3. Participants will evaluate the effects of stress, burnout, vicarious or secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue.

4. Participants will implement new self-care strategies in their own practice.
