We've singled out a particular year before, choosing to explore what went on in R&B back in 1998. This time around, we're stopping smack in the middle of the decade for an extended look at what made 1995 stand out from both a musical and historical standpoint.New Jack Swing had faded by then, giving way to R&B and hip-hop collaborations with a more modern sound. Huge artists like Mariah Carey released some of their best work to date, while new artists with powerful voices like Monica proved that the genre was safe in their youthful hands. A virtuosic artist like D'Angelo made his solo debut while the ever-influential Jodeci released their last album of the decade. Producers like Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who spent the previous decade shaping R&B into what it had become, further refined their sound through continued work with Janet Jackson—who released her first greatest hits album. And Babyface was the architect of the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, a home for hits from artists across generations.
We could go on and on here, but we'd rather our family be part of the experience. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door—join us as we go back 30 years to examine how R&B got to where it is today.
