If you ask us, the history of R&B music in Los Angeles is more fascinating than anything about the music industry by itself. We've focused on R&B's relationship to certain cities in the past, but we've decided to start 2025 off by looking at the whole state of California's influence on the genre. The Great Migration and the impact of World War ll helped shape the state's cultural fabric, creating a melting pot of music represented from Northern California down. Through the years, doo-wop, soul, funk, jazz, and more have merged into something with a distinct West Coast twist that's made the entire genre better. We look forward to not only looking at Cali's R&B history, but defining the sound of a huge state with so many different artists and styles, from the middle of the 20th century to now. (If you hear "It Never Rains in Southern California"—or any song from any Cali artist, for that matter—in your head while reading this, we completely understand.)
As usual, tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Get them ASAP so you can ring in the new year with us as we take on one of our more ambitious tasks to date.

The R&B Club is a cultural gathering founded in 2018 that discusses the influence of R&B music. In other words, think of it as a musical book club-style meetup. Follow us on social media at @therandbclubdc for more information.
