Duke of George presents
The Quiet One - The Music of George Harrison
"The Beatles exist apart from myself. I am not really Beatle George. Beatle George is like a suit or shirt that I once wore on occasion … people may see that shirt and mistake it for me. … I play a little guitar, write a few tunes, make a few movies, but none of that's really me. The real me is something else … I am a very humble person. I don't want to stay in the music industry full time, because I'm a gardener. I plant flowers and watch them grow."
As a member of The Beatles, where does one begin? As well as contributing guitar parts that complemented the Beatles’ songs perfectly, standout George Harrison compositions include ‘Taxman’, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, ‘Here Comes The Sun’ and ‘Something’. The latter, described by Frank Sinatra as ‘the greatest love song’, has been recorded over 500 times, and in multiple languages. Of all The Beatles’ songs, only ‘Yesterday’ has been covered more.
George Harrison, however, saw being a Beatle as just one part of his life. He was a lead and slide guitarist, singer, songwriter, collaborator, record producer, film producer, instigator of star-studded charity concerts, Formula 1 enthusiast, and gardener; dedicating his autobiography to gardeners everywhere.
A songwriter whose work had to push through the justifiably impenetrable Lennon-McCartney barrier for inclusion on Beatles albums. By the late ‘60s this was a cause of frustration for the maturing ‘quiet one’ and Harrison’s stockpile of compositions formed his triple album, All Things Must Pass, upon The Beatles’ breakup. It became the most successful album by a solo Beatle, going seven-times platinum and being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
A musician who brought non-western instruments into the most popular band in the world. With such songs as ‘The Inner Light’ and ‘Within You Without You’, Harrison introduced classical Indian instrumentation to a mainstream western audience. These deeply meaningful songs also show an intensely spiritual person whose fascination with eastern philosophies sparked widespread interest among youth counterculture. ‘My Sweet Lord’ spoke of his religious yearning and included Hare Krishna chanting. ‘All Things Must Pass’ was inspired by Taoist philosophy’s acceptance of impermanence, whilst reflecting on the demise of the biggest band in the world.
Harrison was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame both as a Beatle and as a solo artist. He was a Grammy award winner, polled 11th in Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest guitarists of all time, and number 65th in their greatest songwriters list. Three decades after beginning his career with The Quarrymen, Harrison instigated the world’s biggest supergroup, The Traveling Wilburys, who had triple-platinum-selling success in the ‘80s.
The Quiet One is a celebration of all things George: his work with The Beatles, his solo career and his time as a Traveling Wilbury. From tender ballads to slide-driven blues, and uplifting pop to all-out rock. Enjoy the breadth of musical styles and reflect on the depth of his lyrics. "His head is filled with things to say."
