About this Event

Are we still capable of having a real conversation with our neighbors?

In an era of endless online shouting matches and 24/7 cable news talking points, Del Ray Public House (DRP) is stepping back in time to revive a great American tradition. As part of the upcoming Alexandria 250 celebrations, we are launching The 1776 Salon, a monthly neighborhood gathering inspired by the raw, respectful, and revolutionary tavern debates that shaped our nation's founding.

Whether you consider yourself a progressive, a conservative, or are completely disillusioned with the whole political system, you have a seat at our table. This isn’t a place for stump speeches—it’s a living-room style forum designed for listening to understand, not listening to respond.

Volume 1 Topic: "The Pursuit of Happiness vs. The Common Good"

The Core Question: What do we actually owe our neighbors?

For our inaugural salon, we are diving straight into the foundational tension of the American experiment. We will take the most famous phrase from the Declaration of Independence—the pursuit of happiness—and look at it through a modern, local lens. Where does your individual liberty to live exactly as you choose end, and your obligation to your local community begin? Can a neighborhood truly thrive if everyone is entirely self-reliant, or is mutual dependence necessary?

How It Works: The Tavern Code of Conduct

To keep the energy high and the tempers low, this evening follows a structured, collaborative format built on a strict "Tavern Code":

  • The Assembly: Arrive, grab a table, and break bread. We’ll feature a curated "1776 Flight" highlighting exceptional Virginia bourbons and colonial-era ryes alongside our full dinner and pub menu.
  • The Table Synods: We don't do open mics for loud voices to dominate. Instead, every table will be given specific prompt cards to guide small-group, face-to-face discussions among themselves.
  • The Town Hall Synthesis: At the end of the night, we'll bring the room together for a group wrap-up with a unique catch: You cannot share your own opinion; you can only share the most insightful point you heard from someone else at your table.
  • The Ground Rules: No interrupting, no personal attacks, and no national politicians' names are allowed in the arguments. We assume good faith from everyone who pulls up a chair.

Event Details & Entry
  • Admission: Free to attend, but registration is highly requested so we can properly arrange the seating and tables.
  • Food & Drink: A full tavern dinner menu and custom beverage list will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
  • Who it’s for: Anyone looking for authentic community connection, deep intellectual curiosity, and a respectful environment to discuss big ideas.

Leave the internet at the door. Pull up a chair, grab a pint, and let's talk like neighbors again.
