The Propellers & Pistons Winter Cruise!

The scouting is officially done, the route is ironed out, and the details for our epic mid-winter club run are officially locked in! Mickey and I took Shrek out to test the roads, and we have put together an absolute cracker of a day. Because of venue availability, we are switching things up and hitting the road on Saturday, 11 July, instead of our usual Sunday slot.
This trip is a scenic, 150 km round trip that perfectly mixes local history, beautiful open backroads, and the best coastal-style comfort food around. Whether you are driving a custom Beach Buggy, a rugged Baja Bug, an old-school VW Beetle, or any classic air-cooled VW vehicle, grab your favourite jacket and join the ultimate convoy.
Please make sure to read our permanent Convoy Etiquette & Rules on the official page before we roll out: https://wildbuggers.co.za/next-event/
THE ITINERARY
9:00 AM: Meet and gather at Woodbridge Island, Milnerton.
9:30 AM: Engines start and we roll out strictly on time.
First Stop: South African Air Force (SAAF) Museum, Ysterplaat.
Quick Pitstop: De Werf (30-minute leg-stretch & restroom stop).
Lunch Stop: Cape to Rio Fisheries, Paarl (Pavement Campout style!).
FIRST STOP: PLANES, PISTONS, AND A CHEAP PINT
Our first destination is the historic SAAF Museum at Ysterplaat. If you have a passion for vintage engines, aviation history, and classic mechanical engineering, you are going to love walking through the massive hangars surrounded by iconic fighter jets, helicopters, and aviation memorabilia.
If you need a quick mid-morning bite, they have boerewors rolls and hamburgers on the go, along with a legendary museum bar that is famously easy on the wallet. Don't fill up too much on the burgers, though, because the main feast lies further inland!
THE SCENIC ROUTE: COASTLINES, BACKROADS, AND VALLEYS
Once we finish admiring the wings, we are firing up our flat-four engines for a phenomenal drive. We will head out from the museum via the beautiful coastal route toward Melkbosstrand. From there, we turn inland to take the quiet, scenic backroads over to De Werf for a quick 30-minute pitstop.
Once everyone is geared up again, the convoy will snake its way through Philadelphia, Route 44, and Windmeul, cruising through stunning countryside before dropping right into the heart of the valley.
NEXT STOP: THE BEST FISH & CHIPS (PAVEMENT PARTY STYLE!)
Our final destination is Paarl. We are heading straight to Cape to Rio Fisheries for what locals call the absolute best fish and chips in the entire Western Cape.
Seating inside is very limited, but they have a massive pavement right outside that is just perfect for us. You can either sit and eat inside your ride, or do what I'll be doing: pack your camping chairs in the back of your buggy or Beetle so we can set up a proper Wild Buggers campout right there on the pavement!
WHY YOU SHOULD CRUISE WITH US
The Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club is all about family-friendly, relaxed car events in Cape Town and the Western Cape. There is no competition, no ego, and no rush—just pure camaraderie, great people, and the unique sound of air-cooled VW classics taking over the highway.
Clean off the winter dust, check your oil, pack those camping chairs, and let’s make some noise!
Dit gaan lekker wees!
