Saturday, December 10th, 6:15 pm -8:30 pm Special NIGHT HIKE!!!Celebrate the season with our best for the last hike of the year! Long Beach churches unite for The Prince of Peace Pageant for a live nativity depicted across five different Long Beach congregations. Plan now to go to the 49th annual Portraits of the Prince of Peace Pageant and be prepared to run into royalty. This popular Christmas tradition features 16 nativity scenes telling the birth of the King of Kings. These churches get together once a year to put on this event — the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.” The whole family will LOVE this wholesome event!
Some scenes involve up to 3 dozen volunteers who must stay perfectly still for 90 minutes. Other locations showcase scripture reading, and still, others have live animals. Each church may have opportunities to hear carolers singing and other live musical entertainment.
“It’s a way to get the real spirit of Christmas without Santa Claus or the gifts. It’s totally free in every sense of the word. It doesn’t matter about your religious domination, but it brings the spirit in Christmas back. “says a longtime participant.
The pageant’s origins begin with Pastor Roger Magnuson of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, who wanted to find a way to focus the celebration on something other than toys and presents. In 1972, he and other church leaders created an outdoor pageant celebrating the journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Christ featuring people and animals.
Meet at 6:15 pm in the parking lot of Parkcrest Christian Church, 3936 Woodruff Avenue • Long Beach. We will walk to St. Cornelius Church and return by 8:30 pm. Wear comfortable walking shoes and your best Christmas attire!
