The Price of Resistance: Sala Udin, An American Agitator is a powerful new documentary that examines the extraordinary life of Sala Udin, a fearless civil rights activist, community leader, and former Pittsburgh City Councilman whose decades-long fight for justice came at great personal cost.
Produced by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Annette Banks (Freedom House Ambulance) and award-winning director and writer Ty Cooper (Amanda), the 30-minute film blends rare archival footage, intimate reflections, and firsthand accounts to bring to light the story of a man who dared to challenge the forces of systemic racism.
As a young activist who relocated to Mississippi to join the civil rights movement, Udin confronted voter suppression, police intimidation, and the Ku Klux Klan at a time when speaking out placed one’s safety in constant jeopardy. His activism made him a target of government surveillance, and though the film includes an interview with a retired FBI agent who did not monitor Udin directly, his testimony reveals the larger government strategies aimed at silencing organizations like the Black Panther Party and other groups during one of the most volatile chapters of American history.
Beyond documenting the danger and resilience of the Civil Rights era, the film underscores Udin’s lasting contributions as a mentor, policymaker, and public servant, reminding audiences that the struggle for equity is ongoing and that the cost of resistance remains high. “Sala Udin’s life reflects the true cost of activism,” says producer Ty Cooper. “This film is not only about what he endured, but also about what we can learn today from his courage, resilience, and commitment to justice.” Producer Annette Banks adds, “Our goal with this project is to ensure his story reaches a wide audience at a time when our country is still grappling with the same questions of democracy, equality, and who gets to fully participate in them.”
Following its sold-out premieres, and receipt of the Programmers Award at the 2026 Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, The Price of Resistance is now accepting dates for its national screening tour that includes film festivals, universities, library systems, civic leagues, and others. Each screening is followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker(s) to provide additional context and inspire dialogue that challenges communities to confront the legacies of injustice and imagine a more equitable future.
