Explore a range of exciting portrait processes on this five-week course running over 5 Wednesdays 5th June – 3rd July 10:00am-12:30pm.
During the course you will explore and be guided through a variety of techniques for representing the portrait including drawing, monoprint and painting. You’ll explore chiaroscuro in both drawing and monoprinting, will add decorative elements to your prints and learn how to observe and create accurate facial proportions.
There will also be an emphasis on colour mixing to create a painted portrait in acrylics. You’ll learn how to use oil based printmaking inks and our etching presses to create monoprinted works in addition to drawings and paintings.
What experience do I need?
The course is suitable for absolute beginners or those wishing to build upon previous experience in monoprint or colour mixing for portrait painting.
The course follows a step by step approach in which you will be offered guidance and instruction at every level.
What will I make?
You will make preparatory drawings using charcoal and will make several monoprint portraits onto paper.
You will produce some colour mixing samples to help you develop a final portrait painting using water based acrylic paints. The painting may be on canvas or paper depending on your preference.
Who is my tutor?
Chris Eastham is an experienced art and design teacher having taught in high schools mainly through to A level but with some adult education classes. She has a degree in Fine Art and is a practicing painter/printmaker. Chris has been a member of Leeds Print Workshop since 2017 and has led many workshops in mono printmaking.
She has a painting studio in the same building as the print workshop and regularly exhibits and sells her work. In the Spring of 2019 she was a successful contestant on the popular television program, Sky Portrait Artist of the Year.

Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
