About this Event
Join Professor KJ Reed for a group discussion on the politicization of transgender and gender-diverse communities, with a particular focus on youth. We’ll talk about how trans and gender-diverse folks are positioned in media and by politicians, the language that is used in political debates, and what affect this all has on trans individuals and society overall. This session will not debate trans rights, rather focus on the often harmful effects of politicization.
Participants are asked to pre-read a short blog article to help inform discussion: The real threat to gender-diverse children is the politicization of care issues like puberty blockers and detransition
Admission is free, but pre-registration is required.
Location: This event is held in an accessible space at the VIU Nanaimo campus. The exact location will be sent to participants upon registration.
KJ Reed (they/them) is a Professor of Studies in Women and Gender in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Vancouver Island University. Their current research explores privacy and surveillance in the lives of trans and other gender-diverse youth, as well as the rhetorical function of transphobic claims.
