The poetics of the decorated interior: wall painting, glass, and ceramics in Melbourne and beyond 1880-1915.
About this Event

Villa Alba’s stunning interior in Studley Park, Kew, remains the preeminent, surviving example of painted art decoration of the late Victorian period in Melbourne created by the Paterson Brothers.

This mid 1880’s villa is our immersive entry point into the visual exploration of other surviving decorated interiors by Australian decorative artists and firms from this golden period and into the early years of the 20 th century. Offering fresh perspectives, this illustrated presentation illuminates depictions of history, myth, literature, and the exotic in the painted decorations, ceramics, and stained and etched glass in historic interiors across town and country.

At the conclusion of the presentation light refreshments will be served.

Presenter: Dr Andrew Montana was a senior lecturer in Art and Design History at the Australian National University for almost 20 years. An independent scholar and researcher of art, architecture and the decorative arts, he has published three monographs, many chapters and international articles and has worked on an exhibition and publications for The Australiana Fund.
