Today, the Trump Administration has made an attack on “gender ideology” a centerpiece of its agenda. In this talk, Dr. Zaretsky traces the historical roots of the political right’s current preoccupation with gender and sexuality. She argues that this preoccupation is nothing new, but instead can be traced back to the early 1970s, when New Right activists argued that there were deep connections between national decline and family decline in the United States. Surveying the rise of women’s and gay liberation and the perceived erosion of the traditional family, these activists contended that these transformations had weakened the nation itself. The talk explores the gender and sexual politics of the early 1970s in order to contextualize the centrality of gender to our current political moment.
