The Pillow Lounge
Gallery visitors are invited to enter The Pillow Lounge and get cozy. Cushions, pillows, and billowing fabric completely encapsulate the white-cube gallery space, transforming it into an intimate setting for visitors to sit and chat. This installation serves to bridge a gap: connecting art to the community and building community through shared experience of the art.
The community itself is reflected in the materials: fabric harvested from clothes and linens, salvaged from local thrift stores incorporate the past of previous owners and are woven into every aspect of the installation’s construction. The art deco design motif is inspired by the two historic theaters close by, which also speaks to the history of San Bernardino and its role in the golden age of Hollywood. The color palette is an inviting mix of warm purple, magenta, red, pink, orange, and gold.
I like to play with dichotomies as a method of balance, humor, and delight. Placing a pillow fort in a pristine gallery space and inviting people to touch the art, up-cycling clothes as a fine art medium, using high tech processes and hand techniques such as embroidery are conscious inclusions.
Opening Reception on Saturday, September 25th, from 4 PM-9 PM PST
