The topic for this evening's discussion is "Freedom of Speech." It will be led by Dr. Tim Shiell, Professor Emeritus in the English, Philosophy & Communication Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin – Stout. He founded and directed the Center for Applied Ethics as well as the Menard Center for the Study of Institutions and Innovation (MCSII) at the University. He continues to direct MCSII, is the Interim Director launching the new University of Wisconsin Institute for Citizenship and Civil Dialogue, and served as the Principal Investigator for the 2023 UW Student Free Speech Survey. Professor Shiell has focused much of his research on topics pertaining to the First Amendment and free speech policies. His publications include Campus Hate Speech on Trial (1998 and 2009) and African Americans and the First Amendment (2019). His contributions include 200 papers, workshops, presentations, and panels to scholarly and public audiences.
