We typically hold people responsible for their actions, but we don’t blame earthquakes or praise sunshine for what they do. One reason we might give for our different attitudes is that we think that only people act freely, whereas earthquakes and sunshine lack free will.
But what does it mean to say that we are free? Are our choices completely undetermined by natural laws or other causes? If our choices are determined, are they still free in any meaningful sense, and are any of us worthy of blame or praise for what we do?
