About this Event

Juneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day, recognizing June 19th, 1865, as the last day of slavery. The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope that exist within African American history and culture. The Census Bureau, whose mission is to serve as the nation’s leading provider for quality data about people and the economy, counted 1,776,891 Black residents within the five boroughs of New York City as of 2020. Further analysis shows that this includes subgroups identified as African American (ADOS/FBA), Afro-Caribbeans, Continental Africans, Afro-Latinos and Afro-South Asians. Together, they make up the largest concentration of people of African descent in North America while New York City’s metropolitan area serves as the largest metropolitan economy in the world.

There are very few places in the world that can claim the diversity of blackness the way that NYC can. From the African continent to Central and South America and the Caribbean, the depth and diverse culture of the Black diaspora is everywhere throughout the five boroughs.

Join the Economic Leadership Council as we present a formal gathering of scholars, researchers, governments, and community leaders in recognition of Juneteenth, The People of African Descent Symposium.

This two-hour session will provide a high-level learning experience from NYC’s most prestigious scholars from the City University of New York, Dr. John Flateau and Dr. Zulema Blair regarding socio-demographic trends and key analyses within NYC’s African Descent population as a community of interest. Both presentations will be followed by a brief fireside chat, “Forward Now” around policy, the economy and current events; hosted by the Economic Development Committee Chairwoman of the Negro Council Negro Woman Queens County Section, Mrs. Monica Pringle.

The event will take place on Saturday, June 3 from 2pm to 4pm at the Greater Nexus Executive Conference Room located at 8914 Parsons Blvd Jamaica NY 11432.
