About this Event
The Pentiment Series #4
Date: Friday, March 14, 2025
Location: Williamsburg Art and Historical Center
Join us at the beautiful and historic WAH Center for this monthly series showcasing genre defying artists from all corners of the creative, and improvised music world. The mission of this innovative series is to foster a contemporary audience for live performance through unique and thoughtful programming.
Featuring:
SET 1:
Zosha Warpeha is a composer-performer working in a meditative space at the intersection of contemporary improvisation and folk traditions. Using bowed stringed instruments alongside her own voice, her long-form compositions explore transformations of time and tonality. She performs primarily on Hardanger d’amore, a sympathetic-stringed instrument closely related to the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle. Her current work is informed by the cyclical forms, rhythmic elasticity, and the physical momentum of Nordic folk music.
SET 2:
Sprat, featuring Nora Stanley, Priya Carlberg, and Travis Bliss, explores the intimate dialogue between wind instruments and the human voice. Weaving together saxophones, clarinets, and synth, they craft a tapestry of acoustic blending and lush textures—like brushstrokes layering color on a canvas; their music unfolds into a dynamic and rich musical landscape.
SET 3:
Ali/Bordreuil/Mattrey is a freely improvised string trio that explores unconventional sound worlds, natural resonant frequencies of the instruments, and calls upon extended techniques through the use of preparations and unorthodox playing styles. Active since 2014, the trio has performed at MoMA PS1, the Rubin Museum, Issue Project Room, and Arts for Arts among others, and recorded a radio segment on WKCR. Their debut album “i used to sing so lyrical” was released on Astral Spirits in June 2019.
SET 4:
Explosive and wistful, sinonó performs isabel crespo pardo's poemsongs - improvisative pieces centering melody, metaphor and abstraction to create familiar yet surprising environments, crackling with aliveness. Described as “middle-of-the-night music” (Piotr Orlov for Dada Strain), the trio features vocalist isabel crespo pardo, cellist Lester St. Louis, and bassist Henry Fraser. sinonó has performed at venues such as Roulette Intermedium, Lincoln Center Atrium, and The DiMenna Center. They released their debut album, (Subtext Recordings) in Spring 2024, and are preparing to record their sophomore album.
In addition to the evening's performance, this event will include the opportunity to enjoy drinks and light snacks in the art gallery before and after the show, featuring our latest showcase!
