About this Event

A chance to browse archival items relating to antiracism, education, and children's literature and participate in a community conversation about lessons from the past and plans for the future!

Celia Burgess-Macey, now retired, was Lecturer in English and Early years/primary education at Goldsmiths. She has an extensive archive from her time as an antiracist educator and activist. She will be sharing some of that archive with us.

Kandace Chimbiri is an author, speaker and educator. She is currently working on book four in a five-book deal with Scholastic UK for my Our Stories: New Black Histories series. She also leads Black history-themed ‘meet the author’ art workshops for children. Her books include: The Story of the Windrush; The Story of Afro Hair, 5,000 Years of History, Fashion and Style; The Story of Britain’s Black Airmen; The Story of Britain's Black Nurses.

Dr Darren Chetty is a Lecturer in English Education at UCL Institute of Education. He taught in London primary schools for two decades. He contributed to the bestselling book, The Good Immigrant, edited by Nikesh Shukla. Darren provided training for the Carnegie Award judges and advises on the CLPE Reflecting Realities research and Penguin / Runnymede Trust’s Lit in Colour project. Together with Karen Sands-O'Connor he authored Beyond the Secret Garden: Racially Minoritised People in British Children's Books. The book was published by EMC and draws on their long-running column in Books for Keeps.

This event is supported by The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE), English and Media Centre (EMC), and Books for Keeps magazine.
