The Past Meets The Future with Zawadi Yamungu

Indigenous music songstress and instrumentalist is once again working on her show The Past Meets the Future with Zawadi Yamungu. This is an event that bridges the gap between the archived music from our forefathers which carries our heritage and the music that is currently in with great hope of preserving our histories through song to the future.

Zawadi Yamungu is a South African indigenous musician born at Mandeni north of KwaZulu-Natal. The International artist started her career at a local church group and later got exposed to acting dancing music writing and composing which contributed in enhancing her career as a professional artist.

Zawadi Yamungu is known for singing “amahubo” indigenous music that was written and sung by Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu. Princess Magogo was a Zulu Princess musician and poet who contributed to the development of traditional music in South Africa and was an authority on Zulu traditions history and folklore. On the show Yamungu will also be paying tribute to legends such as Busi Mhlongo Miriam Makeba and others. She will also be performing along with musicians Bavikile Ngema Kerolin Govender Mandisa Cebekhulu and a poet Sindiswa Zulu.

Yamungu says that she wishes that a younger generation may embrace culture through indigenous music custodians and that is where she feels the need of passing the knowledge. “Cultural music is not just a thing of the past” says Yamungu.

Past Meets the Future with Zawadi Yamungu is set to take place on the 1st of October 2022 at KwaMashu Ekhaya MultiArts Centre known as KCap proudly sponsored by SAMPRA.
