About this Event
Get a first look at excerpts from The Passion According to Janair, a solo show conceived and performed by Brazilian actress and playwright Ana Carbatti, before it opens at HERE Arts Center. Inspired by The Passion According to G.H. by Clarice Lispector — Brazil’s iconic modernist writer now experiencing a renaissance in the English-speaking world — the play reimagines Lispector’s novel from the point of view of Janair, a Black domestic worker in Rio de Janeiro, as she confronts racial, gender, and class-based oppression. Co-written by Andressa Furletti, artistic director of Group Dot BR (NYC’s only Brazilian theater company), the play is an exploration of systemic injustice, identity, and personal empowerment. Following selected scenes, Carbatti joins in a discussion about the show and Clarice Lispector’s work with Suzanne Farrin, composer of Macabéa, based on a novel by Lispector, and professor of Music at the CUNY Graduate Center and Hunter College; Idra Novey, a novelist, poet, and translator of Lispector’s The Passion According to G.H.; and moderator Mila Burns, associate director of the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center and a professor of History at Lehman College and the Graduate Center.
Presented with the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies and .
