It was a tough act to follow when his first big job as an actor was a featured role in a movie that went on to garner 9 Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) and remained the highest grossing film of all time for 11 years (E.T. The Extra Terrestrial) but Christopher Thomas (you can call him Tommy) Howell did just that. His role in E.T. led to him being cast in the lead role of Ponyboy Curtis in Francis Ford Coppola's acclaimed adaptation of S.E. Hinton's award winning (and still taught in schools across America today) coming-of-age novel The Outsiders. The movie, which also featured a cast of rising young actors like Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe, also went on to become a beloved classic, often screened in classrooms teaching the book and even recently being turned into a musical, debuting this year on Broadway.
Tommy turned his critical notice from The Outsiders into a long and successful career- starting with lead or featured roles in 80s favorites like Red Dawn, Secret Admirer, The Hitcher and Grandview USA (with Jamie Leigh Curtis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, John Cusack and Troy Donahue). He has spent the decades since acting in everything from low-budget thrillers to big budget, highbrow war epics... from guest spots and longer runs on award winning television (Bosch, The Walking Dead, Criminal Minds, Ray Donovan, Sons Of Anarchy etc...) to the world of comic book adaptations, including roles in The Amazing Spider-Man, Netflix's The Punisher and often voicing Professor Zoom/ Reverse Flash in animated projects and video games for Warner Bros/ DC Comics.
His most recent starring role was in 2023's Obliterated, Netflix's number one world ranking Action-Dramedy series from the creators of Cobra Kai.
A lifelong fan of classic country, southern rock, roots music and Americana, Tommy has spent any down time he has from acting in the past few years writing music, recording, and performing live on tour and around his current home in Nashville, where he lives with his wife, Brandi. He released 3 singles in 2022 and debuted his first album, American Storyteller, in 2023. His current single, "Take the Reins", off his second album, Cowboys Don't Cry, is climbing the charts on country radio.
“These songs came right up out of the dirt and dust of rodeo arenas all over the West and Tommy’s scratchy, twanging downright infectious voice is a cross between Cash/Kristofferson/Dylan/Willie and Prine. For my money, that’s a pretty good place to start. The band is tight, funky, and in-tune with Tommy and his soulful interpretations of the songs. I’m a believer!” (platinum selling and Grammy & American Country Music award winning Larry Gatlin of The Gatlin Brothers)
On Friday, April 26th 2024, Tommy brings both the movie that made him a star AND his band to Pensacola, FL for a special night at Pensacola American Legion Post 33.
The Gumshoe Presents has teamed with the new leadership of this over a century old chapter of the national veteran's organization and their historic, nearly century old building to bring you this unique event. After over a year of restorations paid for by various independent fundraising efforts and a generous grant from the (CRA) Community Redevelopment Association, this marks one of the first major events at this iconic Barrancas Street building since its re-opening.
The night will include a big screen screening of The Outsiders- with C Thomas Howell providing a live, running commentary on the film throughout- giving us an inside look into the making of the movie as well as his relationship with the original novel and its author, S.E. Hinton.
The screening will be followed by a live performance by Tommy and his band- featuring songs from American Storyteller and Cowboys Don't Cry, as well as an audience Q & A where attendees can ask their questions about his Hollywood AND Nashville careers.
The event is open to ALL AGES, though there will be a small bar for those 21+ who wish to take advantage.
The P'Cola Rolla food truck will also be onsite with their locally famous "southern comfort food" egg-rolls throughout the night. www.facebook.com/pcolaroll
