About the
Outsiders House Museum
Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a rich cultural landscape filled with stories of triumph and
perseverance. The Outsiders House Museum is part of this tradition and provides an
exclusive opportunity to experience a living piece of literature and film here in Tulsa.
The Outsiders House Museum celebrates the work of S. E. Hinton and Francis Ford
Coppola's 1983 film adaptation by The Outsiders House Museum. The museum provides a
one-of-a-kind cultural experience by allowing visitors to connect with a story and author
who has impacted millions. Through an ever-expanding collection of artifacts and program
experiences, the museum shares the timeless Tulsa story while inspiring students to nurture
a love of reading, writing, and unlimited creativity.
S. E. Hinton began writing at age 15 and earned a D+ in her creative writing class the year
she penned The Outsiders. Today, all Oklahoma students read the novel in middle school
and are welcomed into a world that is written by and for them. It is one of the most
powerful examples of unleashing creativity through storytelling, regardless of age.
Since the first year the house was open to visitors, the number of students has increased
from 800 to 8,000 annually. The 100-year-old house needs your help to continue to inspire
students and stay a beacon for Tulsa tourism.
In addition to the housing upgrades required, only a part of the story is being told. Founder
Danny Boy O'Connor has thousands of pieces from S.E. Hinton's work that still need to be
shared. His vision is for a larger museum that encompasses Hinton's incredible impact on
the literary world. Together, we can support the Outsiders House Museum and S.E.
Hinton's legacy, which was born in our beautiful city, Tulsa, Oklahoma!
THE OUTSIDERS
HOUSE MUSEUM
The Outsiders House Museum honors the legacy of S. E. Hinton by fostering
creativity, inspiring students, and uniting the Tulsa community and beyond.
Founded by Hip-Hop artist Danny Boy O’Connor in 2016, who is driven by a
deep passion for history, preservation, and generational inspiration, the
once-forgotten house has been meticulously restored and transformed into a
nationally recognized museum.
EDUCATIONAL IMPACT
The Outsiders remains a cornerstone of youth literature, with all Oklahoma middle
school students and 75% of students across the U.S. reading the novel as part of their
required curriculum.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT HIGHLIGHTS
Over 12,000 junior high and middle school students have visited the museum
since its opening.
Private school tours are offered Monday through Thursday, averaging 150 tours
and 4,000 students annually.
In 2024, 6,000 students were able to find inspiration by visiting the museum,
bringing their education to tangible life.
TPS PARTNERSHIP
2024–25 School Y ear: All 8th-grade classes from four different schools attended.
All 8th-grade classes districtwide will participate—an annual increase of 8,000
students from Tulsa Public Schools alone.
