The Orbweavers launch their new album New Moon / Silver Moon (out June 28 on Mistletone Records) with a matinee show at Darebin Arts Centre. Tickets on sale now! https://darebin.sales.ticketsearch.com/sales/salesevent/132428New single ‘Edges of Memory’ is a meditation on insomnia, the inertia of grief and warm salve of friendship, written along the Upfield bike path to Fawkner cemetery on Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Country. New Moon / Silver Moon responds to the many layered histories of two places: Narrm / Melbourne, and Broken Hill on Wilyakali Country, and surrounding Barkindji Country. The songs of New Moon / Silver Moon ponder waterways, ecosystems and industrial history, along with personal stories and reflections from the present.
The Orbweavers are Marita Dyson and Stuart Flanagan, multidisciplinary artists working in songwriting, music, performance and visual art, joined by Paddy Mann (bass), Jen Sholakis (drums), Biddy Connor (viola), Laura Hertaeg (trumpet). They have released three studio albums (Deep Leads garnering PBS Feature Album, Loom RRR Album of the Week), 14 singles, created commissioned works for cultural organisations, film, ABC TV and radio, and performed at festivals across the country.
The Orbweavers have been researching and writing songs about local waterways, industrial history and environmental change for many years. They received a State Library of Victoria Creative Fellowship in 2016 to research and write a suite of songs about local waterways, which has developed into a variety of ongoing creative responses, performances and collaborations. Following their recent residency in Broken Hill in Far West NSW, The Orbweavers’ new songs continue to respond to the specificities of place, as they seek to more deeply understand and respond to local histories and the ongoing impacts of colonisation and industrialisation on ecosystems.
review of ‘When it Rains in Broken Hill’, also from New Moon / Silver Moon:
“The mists of Broken Hill’s spring rain, and the desert flowers that bloom with it, come to life on the Orbweavers’ dreamy, textural new song. It’s all about the details – Marita Dyson’s gentle vocals are complemented by a luscious blend of chorals, harp and strings, and the lyrics evoke great respect for the land while also communicating a personal story. This sumptuous single is the first taste of the Melbourne band’s upcoming album – their first since 2017” - GISELLE AU-NHIEN NGUYEN - THE GUARDIAN
