The omnivore is inclined towards diversification, innovation, exploration and change, which can be vital to its survival; but on the other hand it has to be careful, mistrustful, ”conservative” in its eating: any new, unknown food is a potential danger. The omnivore’s paradox lies in the tension, the oscillation between the two poles of neophobia (prudence, fear of the unknown, resistance to change) and neophilia (the tendency to explore, the need for change, novelty, variety). […] The eater’s life is at risk whenever they decide to incorporate; but so too are his place in the universe, his essence, his nature, in short his identity. An object inadvisedly incorporated may contaminate him, insidiously transform him from within, possess him or rather deposess him of himself.

The Omnivore’s Paradox: Critical Mouthfeel of Institutions imagines the institution as a body and wonders what its eating practices might look like. What if we playfully employ the metaphor of eating concerning the admission processes of an institution? How could we interpret the often exclusionary mechanisms of our institutions in light of the anxiety-producing liminality of eating, where an object of the world becomes self?
The work is presented as a three-hour ongoing performance installation where the audience can come and go as they please during the evening. The work does not follow a traditional narrative structure but is more fragmented in form, inviting the viewer to take part in a fragmented narrative. We start at 5 p.m. and continue until 8 p.m. From 6 p.m., food will be served in the form of a buffet until closing time. Stay for the evening and enjoy food, drinks and performance, all at the same time!
Bio:
Andreas Engman is an artist, educator, and former chef living and working in Gothenburg. His artistic practice is rooted in a conceptual and research-driven methodology; he frequently seeks counter-rational strategies and speculative forms of meaning-making when producing work. A long-standing interest in his practice involves investigating the many productive entanglements formed at the intersection of institutional critique, political philosophy, the politics of food, and performance practices. His works are associative, open-ended assemblages that often meet the public through installations, durational performances, and soundscapes.

The Omnivore’s Paradox: Critical Mouthfeel of Institutions föreställer sig institutionen som en kropp och undrar hur dess matvanor skulle kunna se ut. Vad händer om vi lekfullt använder metaforen om ätande när det gäller en institutions antagningsprocesser? Hur kan vi tolka våra institutioners ofta exkluderande mekanismer i ljuset av den ångestframkallande gränsöverskridande karaktären hos ätandet, där ett objekt i världen blir jaget?
Verket presenteras som en tre timmar lång performanceinstallation där publiken kan komma och gå som de vill under kvällen. Verket följer inte en traditionell narrativ struktur utan är mer fragmenterat i sin form och inbjuder betraktaren att ta del av en fragmenterad berättelse. Vi börjar klockan 17 och fortsätter till klockan 20. Från klockan 18 serveras mat i form av en buffé fram till stängning. Stanna kvar hela kvällen och njut av mat, dryck och performance, allt på samma gång!
Biografi:
Andreas Engman är konstnär, pedagog och före detta kock som bor och arbetar i Göteborg. Hans konstnärliga praktik är rotad i en konceptuell och forskningsdriven metodik; han söker ofta efter kontrarationella strategier och spekulativa former av meningsskapande när han producerar verk. Ett långvarigt intresse i hans praktik är att undersöka de många produktiva kopplingar som bildas i skärningspunkten mellan institutionskritik, politisk filosofi, matpolitik och performancepraktik. Hans verk är associativa, öppna assemblage som ofta möter publiken genom installationer, långvariga performance och ljudlandskap.
