Join us for an inspiring afternoon exploring one of the Mediterranean's oldest and most enduring cultural treasures, the olive.
The Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission in the UK, in collaboration with the Union of Cypriots in England (EKA), is delighted to welcome internationally renowned archaeologist Dr Sophocles Hadjisavvas for a fascinating lecture on the history, archaeology and technological evolution of olive oil production in Cyprus.
From prehistoric settlements to the beginnings of industrialisation, discover how the olive shaped the economy, society and cultural identity of Cyprus. Through remarkable archaeological discoveries and decades of pioneering research, Dr Hadjisavvas will reveal how ancient communities cultivated, processed and valued one of the island's most precious resources, while also exploring the olive's lasting influence on art, tradition and everyday life across the Mediterranean.
Dr Hadjisavvas is the former Director of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus and one of the island's leading archaeologists. His distinguished career includes excavations at the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, the Phoenician necropolis of Kition and the Late Bronze Age settlement of Alassa. He has curated major international exhibitions, advised the Hellenic Museum of the Olive and Olive Oil in Sparta, and has lectured and published extensively on Cypriot archaeology and ancient technology.
This special lecture is dedicated to the memory of Dr Eleni Palazidou, former President of EKA, whose vision inspired the organisation of this event.
