EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT

This program will follow the life of an employee from hire (including interviewing, and background checks), employee management (training, retraining, and performance management) to separation (in the unfortunate situation where the employment must end, of course). The focus will be on the do’s and don’ts of managers during this process. The program will included simulated situations and real-time interactive Q&A.

Join us as we discuss recent updates to Federal, New York State and City law, and those on the horizon. We will discuss developments employers should be aware of to ensure compliance. We will also address the anticipated impact the upcoming election will likely have on administration on legal issues impacting employers.

Speakers:

Alexis S. Axelrad is a partner in the firm of Barst & Mukamal LLP in New York City. She currently serves as First Vice President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) National’s Executive Committee. Alexis is a three term past Elected Director on AILA’s Board of Governors, and immediate past Chair of AILA National’s CBP Committee. Alexis served in every capacity on the NY AILA Chapter’s Executive Committee including Chair and is the Recipient of the 2020 Susan D. Quarles AILA Service Excellence Award.

She is a frequent writer for periodicals and speaker on immigration and nationality law and is honored to be a source of information and guidance for her colleagues in and outside of the immigration bar. Alexis is a proud member and sponsor of the New York City Chapter of The Society of Human Resources Management (NYCSHRM). Alexis is annual speaker at its Law and Legislative Conference and past speaker at the Annual Conference amongst other NYSCHRM programs.
Ms. Axelrad maintains a busy corporate and family-based immigration practice with a particular emphasis on interaction with the various offices of DHS (CBP, USCIS, ICE, EOIR) and the U.S. Department of State.

Shannon D. Azzaro is an associate in the New York City, New York, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. Her practice focuses on representing employers in workplace law matters, including preventive advice and counseling.

Shannon has experience in handling wage and hour class and collective actions, restrictive covenant litigation, and employment discrimination claims. She represents management in state and federal courts, and before administrative agencies including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the New York State Division of Human Rights, and the New York City Commission on Human Rights. She regularly counsels employers on all aspects of employment law to proactively manage risk and keep employers in compliance with increasing changes to the law.

Prior to joining Jackson Lewis, Shannon was an associate with the Labor and Employment Group of a national law firm. During law school, Shannon participated in Fordham Law’s Consumer Litigation Clinic and was the Cooper-Walsh editor of the Fordham Urban Law Journal.

Ryan C. Chapoteau is a principal in the New York City, New York, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. and is a co-leader of Jackson Lewis' Black Attorney Resource Group. His practice focuses on representing employers ranging from early stage startups to Fortune 50 companies throughout a broad spectrum of industries in workplace law matters.

Ryan has experience litigating in federal court, state court and before administrative agencies, while also appearing regularly at arbitrations and mediations. Ryan defends employers in a wide variety of employment matters, such as discrimination, disability and leave management, harassment, and retaliation claims as well as wage and hour cases. Ryan’s experience includes single- plaintiff litigation along with collective and class action lawsuits.

Michael Jakowsky is a principal in the New York City, New York, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. He partners with clients on all aspects of their workplace strategy, from proactive advice, counsel and training to litigation defense and transactional support. Michael wants his clients to know they can rely on him for support—no matter the concern. Aspiring to become an extension of his client’s team, Michael prioritizes gaining a thorough understanding of their business to find solutions and achieve results consistent with their goals, legal needs, and culture. Proactive counseling is a key to maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws. Michael works with management teams to achieve compliance with a particular focus on wage and hour, including the FLSA, as well as disability leave management (including the FMLA), and reductions-in-force (including WARN).

Laura Victorelli is an associate in the New York City, New York, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. She represents management in employment litigation and advises clients on various aspects of the employer-employee relationship.
Laura’s interest in labor and employment started early, when she attended “Bring Your Child to Work Day” with her mother, a human resources executive. From that day on, Laura developed a passion for workplace relations and its impact on the business world. She pursued this interest in law and business school at the University of Pittsburgh, where she focused on employment law and human resource management. It is this passion that drives Laura’s practice today.
