The Night

New Chamber Ballet presents The Night, a 65-minute ballet with live music, choreographed by Miro Magloire to music by Wolfgang Rihm, in a revival in celebration of the composer's 70th birthday.

Raw emotions, a sense of risk, stormy and piercing gestures: in its time, ‘Romantic’ music was far from the cliché sweetness that we know today. It had a dangerous, subversive quality that today fuels the imagination of composer Wolfgang Rihm, one of our time’s most important musicians.

The mystery and sensual promise of darkness was a favorite device of ‘Romantic’ art, and in The Night it provides the setting for an otherworldly hour of fluid dancing, gravity-defying partnering, moments of breathless stillness, and unrestrained motion, choreographed by Miro Magloire in his trademark up-close, in-the-round style.

The Night begins with Rihm’s languid violin solo Über Die Linie VII, an ecstatic celebration of melodic expression danced by three dancers. Next, tensions rise in a quartet set to a temperamental duet for piano and violin, Phantom Und Eskapade. The climax is a poignant solo to Rihms’ stormy, extravagant Violin Sonata. The calm final section (set to the ultra-sparse Antlitz) brings the ballet to a hypnotic end.

Performers include the dancers Anabel Alpert, Megan Foley, Nicole McGinnis, Amberr Neff, and Rachele Perla; as well as Doori Na (violin) and Miles Walter (piano).

The performance will be 65 minutes, and there will be no intermission. Tickets must be purchased in advance. In accordance with the performance venue's rules, audience members must show proof of vaccination to enter the venue, and wear a mask at all times while inside the building.
