Pianist Dr. Bill Bares is back once again this winter season with “The Music of Charlie Brown Christmas”—a beloved annual show with bassist Zack Page and drummer Alan Hall that takes place on the night before the night before Christmas: December 23rd. The show sets a great holiday mood and has little something for everyone: the first set reprises familiar holiday tunes from the original Charlie Brown Christmas Album by jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi. The second set features Bares’s own modern jazz arrangements of these classics.Previous sold-out performances the Isis, All Souls Cathedral and Little Jumbo showed us that we needed a bigger venue to present our music. To ensure that everyone has a comfortable experience, this year we have moved it downtown to the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts, with two shows: a matinee at 3:00pm and an evening show at 7:00pm.
… And we’ve added some goodies that we know you will enjoy!
For the first set, we’ll be featuring Mike Clark, the legendary drummer who played on Guaraldi's original Peanuts soundtracks in the 1970s!!! Mike rose to prominence with Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters and is still a force on the jazz scene in New York.
For the second set, our trio will become a big band with the debut of The Constellations Orchestra, led by saxophonist Will Boyd and featuring an all-star lineup of horns: Steve Alford, Ashley Hamer Pritchard, Tim Morgan, Justin Ray, Don Mikkelsen, Bill Reichenbach. The arrangements for this group have been commissioned from composers with local roots: Richard Shulman, Steve Alford, Jay Sanders, Alan Hall, Bill Bares, Justin Ray, Joseph Herbst, Will Boyd and Emily Eng.
And there are other special additions as well! A chorus of children, spoken word by poet Kevin Evans, and a very special vocal rendition of “Christmastime is Here” by local legend Rockell Scott.
Funding for these ventures has been provided by the Dan Lucas Memorial Fund and URSA Asheville, a brand-new arts organization devoted to promoting creativity and connection on our local music scene. As the date approaches, seats will fill up fast, so get your tickets now!
